Objective

‘Rural Youth in Japan: Rethink of Your Environment in 2023′ is a series of projects since 2021 which was launched by a doctoral researcher in Tampere University, Department of Built Environment, Finland. The project in 2023 is focused on informal education and activities for youths preferably studying architecture in higher educational institutes, promoting for regional youth study methods and tools for encouraging and empowering active participation among young people in regional areas as well as cooperation, quality, inclusion, creativity, and innovation at the level of organizations and policies. In 2023 summers, we will invite Finnish, Swedish, and Danish youths (Three participants; 18-30 + one group leader; no age limits in each country) to Tsushima, pilot region in Japan to share, invent and practice methods and tools that will support overcoming the difficulties of regional youth in engaging and participating in their communities through the various workshops for three weeks. These workshops and activities are based on Erasmus + Youth Project under promoted by European Commission.

  • To raise awareness on intercultural learning and sensitivity through the communication with various stakeholders in brainstorming stage and by discovering concepts of identity and diversity.
  • To enhance the knowledge and skills in architecture and engineering construction and with communication abilities in diverse working environments in order to create multi-talented young people and decrease unemployment rates.
  • To discover and exploit the potential talents such as communications, leadership, teamwork and planning in early stage through the multicultural working environment.
  • To confirm adaptability of non-formal and informal architecture education in Asian Universities.

Feedback

I just wanted to thank you once again for selecting me and the others that were part of this project. I still cannot believe I was able to experience a place I had always wanted to visit, but through a more authentic and deeper level which was something I never imagined I could have ever achieved. I hope to come back someday to see many of the friends I made in Tsushima again. ありがとうございます!

Amazing opportunity to get to know Japanese culture. By staying in more rural area and getting to interact with local students offered unique perspective for understanding the culture. I felt that the project was beneficial to all the participants by helping to improve teamworking skill in international context. Already looking forward for visiting Japan again!
